Talks and Summaries

jan@johnsenlandscapes.com                           www.johnsenlandscapes.com

Jan presents her illustrated talks at major flower and garden show in the U.S. They are generally 50 minutes to 1 hour long. Some of the most popular lecture topics are shown below.

Serenity by Design

Simplicity, Sanctuary & Delight in the Garden

In this popular powerpoint, I offer intriguing design ideas for enhancing any garden.
Learn why East is considered the ‘auspicious’ direction, how to use a ‘Golden Rectangle’ to create harmony outdoors, and which colors uplift our spirits in a garden.

This is my most requested seminar at the New York Botanical Garden.

Liquid Dreams

Unique Ideas for Adding Sparkle to Your Garden

Water is the magical ingredient in a garden. It can calm us or stimulate us, depending on its form. There are  many ways to incorporate water in a garden but some features are better than others.

I explore using water in all its forms – ephemeral, moving and still. Beautiful  images and fun ideas capture everyone’s imagination.

The Spirit of Stone

An illuminating and beautiful look at creative ways to incorporate natural stone in a landscape. The ‘spirit of stone’ reveals the secrets of Japanese stone types and placement in a garden and inspires the audience with new ideas for using stone accents outdoors. Not to be missed!

Color: Bold and Beautiful Landscapes

This eye catching talk describes how color affects us and the natural world.  I illustrate how reds excite, yellows stimulate, blues stabilize and greens calm us down. I show inspiring examples of color rich gardens and describe how sunlight helps us in our color decisions.

Postage Stamp Gardens - Planters, Verticals, Accents & More

This Powerpoint talk gets everyone’s gardening juices flowing!  I explore gardening in tight spaces and offer many planting ideas for container plantings, green walls, stacked layouts and more.  Informative handout included.

Aligning with Nature: The 5 Principles of Sustainable Design

From "bee hotels" to green roofs, unique storm water catchment systems to native plantings, America's is now on the  sustainable design bandwagon!

This engaging powerpoint talk  looks at the 5 design principles and shows how you can adapt them for  your home landscape. It ends with a discussion of native plant combinations.

What to do with Your Soggy Garden - Ideas for Beautiful, Damp & Sustainable Landscapes
Problem sites can be transformed into beautiful and bio-diverse gardens. This Power Point shows creative ways to turn a slope or soggy area into a lovely outdoor setting. I discuss rain gardens, permeable paving, rain catchment systems and native plants in this informative and timely presentation.

  1. Yours is the only pretty treatment I have seen for dealing w. storm water [In "River of Rocks"]. An EPA website for MD & DC about rainscaping - and the current water challenges focuses on "reduce runoff, slow it down, spread it out, soak it in." Nothing very inspirational or feeds the soul, though cleaning the water IS important for the Chesapeake and other animals. I'm a year behind your raingarden talk. Trying to turn "a lemon into lemonade". Liked your This Old House "Best Ways to Deal w Storm Water" contribution. Since I just discovered your blog tonight, any more "storm water" solutions? Thanks for sharing.
